Shingle Coverage and Bundle Counts

Estimate field-shingle bundles from actual installed coverage, with explicit waste and whole-package rounding.

Coverage matters more than piece count

A shingle bundle is a package. Its installed coverage and number of pieces depend on the product. The exposed area after installation is not simply the sum of the full physical dimensions of every shingle because the installation includes overlap.

Use the installed coverage stated for your selected product. RoofFolio does not assume a universal number of shingles or bundles per square.

How many shingles are in a bundle?

There is no single answer that applies to all products. Read the package or the manufacturer’s product information for the piece count. Two bundles with different shingle counts may have similar coverage, while similar piece counts need not imply equal coverage.

The Shingle Calculator estimates whole field-shingle bundles. It deliberately does not infer the number of individual shingles.

Two valid ways to enter coverage

Product informationCalculator entry
Installed area per bundleEnter that area and select square feet or square metres.
Bundles required per roofing squareChoose verified bundles per square and enter that value.

If a product explicitly requires three bundles per square, each bundle covers one-third of 100 sq ft in that specification. Entering 3 in the verified-ratio mode preserves 100 / 3 internally. Substituting 33.3 sq ft can change a whole-bundle result.

Worked bundle estimate

Target=2,000 × (1 + 10 / 100) = 2,200 sq ft
Coverage per bundle=100 / 3 sq ft
Bundles=ceiling(2,200 / (100 / 3)) = 66

The 10% allowance and three-bundle ratio above are example inputs, not universal recommendations. If target coverage were 2,210 sq ft with that same coverage ratio, the estimate would be 67 bundles, covering approximately 2,233.3333 sq ft. The additional 23.3333 sq ft comes from package rounding.

What is outside this estimate?

Starter strips, hip and ridge caps, flashing, underlayment, fasteners and other accessories are excluded. They require their own product-specific quantities. Calculate different field-shingle products separately.

Waste depends on the chosen planning method and project circumstances. The calculator accepts your percentage; it does not determine it or guarantee sufficient material.

Start with the Roof Area Calculator if you only know a horizontal projection. Use the Roofing Square Calculator to inspect the area in different units.
