3Limits

Starter strips, ridge and hip caps, underlayment, fasteners, flashing and other accessories are excluded. Waste is not a guarantee of sufficient material. Confirm actual product instructions and package coverage. Piece count per bundle cannot be inferred from area alone.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter measured sloping roof area before waste. Select the corresponding area unit.
  2. Enter a waste percentage you have chosen. Enter zero explicitly if no allowance is intended.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s installed coverage per bundle, or its verified bundles-per-square value.
  4. Calculate and compare target coverage, purchased coverage and the excess from whole-bundle rounding.

Formula & method

Target coverage=measured area × (1 + w / 100)
Bundle coverage=100 / n sq ft (if n bundles per square)
Bundles=ceiling(target coverage / bundle coverage)
Purchased coverage=bundles × bundle coverage
Excess coverage=purchased coverage − target coverage

w is your waste percentage. n is the verified number of bundles covering one roofing square for the selected product. Ceiling rounds up to a whole bundle. All areas are converted to the same unit before division.

A worked example

Example inputs, not recommendations

With 2,000 sq ft of measured roof area and a chosen 10% allowance, target coverage is 2,200 sq ft. A product explicitly requiring 3 bundles per square covers exactly one-third square per bundle in this example, so the estimate is 66 bundles.

Assumptions & limitations

Assumes

  • Coverage describes the installed field coverage of the selected product.
  • One product and one coverage specification are used per calculation. Fractional bundles cannot be purchased in this estimate.

Does not cover

Starter strips, ridge and hip caps, underlayment, fasteners, flashing and other accessories are excluded. Waste is not a guarantee of sufficient material. Confirm actual product instructions and package coverage. Piece count per bundle cannot be inferred from area alone.

Geometric planning estimate. This does not size structural members or verify loads, connections, or code compliance. Verify structural and code requirements against local code or with a qualified professional.

Displayed values are rounded; subsequent calculations retain full precision. Numerical limits and accepted formats are documented in Calculation methods.

Common questions

How many shingles are in a bundle?

There is no universal piece count. Counts vary with product and shingle dimensions. Read the selected package or manufacturer’s product information; this calculator estimates bundles from coverage, not individual shingles.

Are there always three bundles in a square?

No. Use the value stated for your product. The worked example uses three only to demonstrate the calculation.

Why is there excess after adding waste?

Waste increases the target coverage first. Whole-bundle rounding can add further coverage because bundles are purchased as complete packages.
