Roof Area Calculator
Calculate sloping roof surface area from nonoverlapping horizontal projections and each section’s pitch.
Materials Tool 4 of 6 · Output: Sloping surface area
2Calculate & check
Enter measurements to see the result and its calculation schedule.
3Limits
Do not double the result when the full horizontal projection already includes both roof slopes. Complex roofs require correctly measured sections. Dormers, openings, hips, valleys and walls are not automatically added or deducted. Rectangular entry is not a roof-shape recognition tool.
How to use this calculator
- Choose your units and enter the length and projected width of a rectangular section. Alternatively, enter its measured horizontal projected area.
- Include eaves in your projection if you intend to count them. Enter that section’s x:12 pitch.
- Add a section for each different pitch or separate nonoverlapping projection.
- Calculate the total and inspect the section schedule before using the area in a material estimate.
Formula & method
P is a horizontal projected area, not an already sloping roof area. Direct-area mode accepts a horizontal projection measured by another method. Each section uses its own pitch p.
A worked example
Example inputs, not recommendations
A 40 × 30 ft horizontal projection at a uniform 6:12 pitch has 1,200 sq ft of projected area. Multiplying by 1.118034 gives approximately 1,341.6408 sq ft of roof surface, or 13.4164 roofing squares.
Assumptions & limitations
Assumes
- Sections do not overlap and each section has a uniform slope.
- The entered projection includes any eaves you wish to count. Waste is not included.

Common questions
Can I use the building footprint?
Only if it represents the intended roof projection. A building footprint normally omits eave overhangs. Add the horizontal overhang dimensions before using a rectangular projection.
What if the roof has different pitches?
Create nonoverlapping sections and enter the pitch of each one. Do not apply an average pitch to the whole roof.
Should I subtract skylights?
The calculator makes no automatic opening deductions. Adjust projected areas only when that matches your measurement and material-planning method; small openings do not necessarily reduce purchasing quantities.
